PotIS: Megan

Introduction

Megan has been a deckhand on the Llira's Steps for perhaps a year and a half now. She seems happy to be travelling from port to port, and often leaves the ship during periods of calm to go swimming. She explains this as an obligation if anyone asks. She seems out of place in cities - the result of an isolated island upbringing.

Megan is firmly opposed to the large-scale destruction of life. At the same time, she seems largely unbothered by any individual death.

Recently she has dreamt of tentacled Things That Should Not Be crawling from the dark abysses to threaten the oceans (and possibly the dry as well), Things that she feels obliged to stop.

After travelling on the Llira's Seps for several months, Megan has left the ship. She says she has to visit someone, but that could mean just about anything.

History

Megan is the daughter of the sorcerer Propheron. Her mother was lost at sea in a shipwreck that spared only herself and her father, tossing them onto a desolate island. Consumed with grief, her father resolved to live out his days on the island where the sea had tossed him. His daughter lived there with him, growing up in a house made of driftwood, eating fish from the waters areound the island and birds caught on the rocks. When she was twelve, a great bird came and spoke to her. It admired the way she lived in isolation, it said, and offered to teach her how better to live with nature. The bird revealed itself to be a druid, Grinswold, the first man other than her father she had seen for nine years, and before long, she was a member of the druid's circle of the Inner Sea.

Her father gave no sign of favour nor of disfavour to Megan's chosen course. He seemed scarcely to notice her absences, and did not seem to see her mentor. At length, he could no longer look after himself, and then Megan could not look after him either. His decline was slow; at last he died during a storm much like that which had taken his wife.

Megan's education continued on her island. When she had learnt sufficiently, her mentor offered to initiate her into mysteries that would cement her bond with nature and assist her to watch over her part of the Sea. The journey took several days, but they came to a place where the sea was deep and the floor rent by fissures. There she was presented to the bronze dragon who sleeps below the Inner Sea. He woke, although she had to wait a long time, and questioned her at length before telling her the secret names of the fishes and blessing her to join the lords of the Inner Sea.

A little over a year ago (when this record began in Elesais 1372) , Megan offered to work for a shipping company as a way of covering her domain more easily. By travelling with the ship, she can cover the ocean more easily than on her own, and may be able to enlist the crew's help if anything should turn up.
