For quite some time now, Serlo Marchant has been on the Steps, and has worked on many other vessels, on various sides of the law, before that. While having no aspirations to actually do any sailing, he enjoys the travel on boats, and the on-again-off-again work of defending them from whoever it turns out they need defending from, or overcoming the defenses of whoever his current employer needs defeated.
Serlo's main motivation when it comes to doing things is usually money, through loyalty to his paying employer and, naturally, collecting things along the way that may be sold. Serlo's moral views are totally black and white: there is very little he won't do, given sufficient incentive, provided it is going to be in his best interests.
In his spare time, he will often be keeping an eye on things on the boat, ensuring people are keeping out of trouble, and maintaining his weapons, of which he has one for just about any circumstance, in case the unexpected should strike. He is not one for long term detailed planning, and so keeps anything that may be useful quite close at hand virtually all the time.
Alas, for poor Serlo has now passed on to greener planes. His demise came as the result of a feirce battle against a fierce magician, and a run of bad luck. It is sure that he will be sorely missed by his companions, and that they won't loot his corpse for magic items.
