SteelDemons: Ethertech

Ethertech History

Ethertech was pioneered in Europe and America at roughly the same time after Duchess Rita Von Rienholdt, published a series of papers detailing ways of unlocking the mysterious etheric force that subtly influences everything about five years ago. Much of what she wrote hearkened back to fictional magic so for a while she was not taken seriously. However she disappeared shortly after she had published her work and has not been heard from since. Edison was fascinated with these papers and had his laboratory focus on creating new devices based on these principles, his experiments were a resounding success and he has since held heavy government contracts to research and develop this new Ethertech. The other hugely successful man in this field is Lars Bransen who created a series of the devices independently from Edison's labs, though much of his work focused on the manipulation of life mostly for medical purposes while Edison's were harnessing more elemental forces. Several other competitors sprung up in Europe and America after the initial breakthroughs in the field were made, these remaining companies are Waterhouse Industries and Hudson Etherics of America, Brucmann & Schmidt of Germany, New Dover Etherics of England and Sinclaire Technologies of France.

The secret behind Ethertech is that it ties in with fictional magic, almost everybody who works with it knows this though it is almost never acknowledged openly due to the widespread panic it would cause. With the development of Ethertech many occultists and sorcerers have come out of hiding to work in this growing industry Janos's dad works with Edison in a consultancy capacity on magic and was one of the first magical consultants in this new Ethertech Industry. Ethertech is slowing being adopted into government service for many new complex projects, most of them military in nature.

Ethertech Appearance

Ethertech typically resembles any other piece of machinery, however it has several curious properties, the first and most obvious is that it always seems to be humming with static electricity, while touching it doesn't induce shocks hair close to an etheric device tends to stand on end. When it is in operation staring at the device too long gives the impression that it is warping into strange and unnatural proportions, however this is usually just an optical illusion associated with the powerful magic fields that the devices generate. Unlike Arcanoweave Ethertech does not need to be plugged in to work, the user must focus for five to six seconds to attune to a device, which is equivalent of plugging it in. However this does not mean that the user can attune to any number of devices, to be able to use multiple devices the user must undergo “threshold therapy” which is essentially a minor surgical procedure combined with magic infusion to increase the users ability to focus on multiple devices. The Ethertech are essentially the same as arcanoweave but they need to be physically connected to the person to use, unless by it the devices very nature it needs to be grafted on.
