Piero, the Venetian
< Faith | Covenant Population | Yannic >
Piero was born in Venice in 1184 A.D./1323 A.A., the son of a baker. Piero, however, feel into a different line of business. He became, in crude terms, a thug and a footpad for a local money-lender who also dabbled in criminal ventures and dubious political activities. Piero became very competent at this kind of work and profited from it greatly; and so when his patron asked him to remove a rival in a more permanent way he did not refuse. This was the first, but not the last, time that Piero deliberatly killed one of his fellow men.
The change in profession suited Piero, he was a better assassin than a footpad, and so it went for many years.
Eventually, however, Piero began to feel uneasy about his life of black deeds. He has began to hear whisperings, just on the edge of his hearing, and to feel tugging on the side of his cloak. He resolved to spend less time killing and more time in prayer, but his patron had risen - thanks, in part, to Piero's ready blade - and his services had been required by ever more powerful men. So the killing continued, and the whispering grew louder and the grasping at his clothes more urgent until there was only one explanation for it: Piero was being punished by God for his crimes.
Surely invisible demons had been sent to plague him, to show him how close he had come to the Eternal Fires. Piero swore that night to kill no more innocents. His patron, however, had work for him. He was to kill the young wife of an important noble who had made the unfortunate error of displeasing the Doge. Piero, however, remonstrated with his patron. They argued, then they fought - after that there was no question about what would happen.
Piero killed his patron that night, and three of his former companions who remained loyal to their master. He was wounded, but fled Venice all the same. He travelled north and west, into the Alps and beyond. On the way he, through chance, become the travelling companion of a strangely silent youth in grey robes...
Piero is a reasonably unlikeable person, and tends to go out of his way to ensure that others get this impression. He is taciturn and suspicious; a legacy of his former line of work.
He spends most of his time with a fellow grumpy old man, Yannic. The other old man has informed him that his "demons" are in fact some of the spirits of those that Piero has killed, who are haunting him. This revelation has done little to ease Piero's fears however.
Piero has also taken to training the turb and others who ask him enough. He does this out of a kind of duty, and a desire to show youngsters his impressive skill-at-arms.
Peiero is an unassuming fellow, which was an asset to him when he was an assassin. He wears simple sturdy clothes, that are dark coloured but still unremarkable. He also wears a vest of reinforced leather under his outer shirt, when he feels the need.
Piero habitually wears his sword buckled on one hip, and several daggers and knives secreted on his person.
Piero is starting to become bent by age, he limps and his lungs find it harder and harder to draw enough breath.
