Clement was born in Montpellier, and following his natural inquisitiveness and skill for sharing knowledge, he attended the University of Paris where he became associated with the newly formed Dominican Order, accompanying a member of the Order to Constantinople to study during his time as a student. Upon his return he took a position as a teacher, and was later appointed Magister in Artibus.
